In Mark 13:1-8, we see Jesus and his disciples visiting the Temple. The disciples are in awe of the Temple’s size and strength—after all, it was the centerpiece of their faith and heritage. Yet Jesus tells them, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” Imagine how shocking this would have sounded to his followers. The Temple represented God’s presence and the security of their faith, yet Jesus was saying even this would eventually fall.
This passage reminds us of the temporary nature of things we rely on. Just as the Temple eventually faced destruction, so do the things in our own lives that once seemed strong and dependable. This can feel especially close to home when we face health issues or the uncertainty that comes with getting older. Whether it’s a sudden illness, a long recovery process, or watching a loved one suffer, these moments can make us feel like our world is crumbling. We might wonder where God is in these times or why such challenges happen.
Yet, Jesus doesn’t share this vision of the Temple’s destruction to create fear. Instead, he uses it as an opportunity to guide his followers toward a deeper, more enduring faith. He tells them, “Do not be alarmed.” He’s teaching them—and us—that while worldly things may fail, God’s love is eternal and unshakable. This faith isn’t about clinging to earthly security but about finding true security in God, even when our surroundings feel unstable.
Holding Faith Through Health Challenges
Health challenges can feel like personal earthquakes, shaking the foundation of our lives. They remind us of our own limitations and can create fear of the unknown. In these times, Jesus’ words encourage us to trust God’s presence in our lives, even when we don’t feel in control. Psalm 46:1 reminds us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” God’s presence is steady even when our physical strength wavers.
Faith in times of health struggles isn’t easy. But it is in these very moments that our faith can grow stronger. Leaning into God’s promises and the support of a faith community helps us build resilience, knowing that God’s love holds us up when our own strength is failing. There’s an invitation here to shift from focusing on what’s passing away and instead find hope in God’s promise that we will never face these struggles alone.
Resilient Faith for Uncertain Times
Just as the disciples questioned Jesus about the Temple, we often look for answers to understand why we’re facing trials. Jesus doesn’t give them a direct answer or a solution; instead, he calls them to stay watchful and grounded in their faith. Life’s challenges—whether it’s personal health, the loss of a loved one, or global hardships—don’t always come with easy answers. Yet, Jesus’ message is clear: we’re invited to find peace, not in answers, but in God’s abiding presence.
To keep faith steady, it can help to set aside time to pray or meditate on scriptures that encourage us to trust God’s strength over our own. Romans 8:18 says, “The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” Through faith, we can focus less on what feels fragile in life and more on what’s unchanging in God’s promise.
Moving Forward with Encouragement
In times when life feels unsteady, we’re reminded to support each other and let God’s love be our foundation. Our faith doesn’t promise a life free of hardship, but it promises that we’re not alone. So, whether you’re navigating a difficult diagnosis, caring for someone struggling, or just facing the uncertainty of tomorrow, remember that you’re surrounded by a faith community and a God who stands with you.
As 1 Peter 5:10 encourages, “After you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace…will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” It’s okay to feel unsettled, but we are held by God’s enduring love that remains, no matter what.
